What’s the Best Way to Improve Your Gas Mileage?
While gas prices seem to have come back down from the stratosphere, at least for the moment, many people are still interested in improving their gas mileage because prices will inevitably rise again. According the Fuel Economy web site , the best way to improve your mileage is to replace your air filter. This can result in a 10% improvement in fuel economy. The next best solution – keeping your engine properly tuned can save you another 4%. This is followed by proper tire inflation (up to 3%), and using the recommended grade of oil gets you another 1-2%. My Jeep just had it’s 15k service this week and I’m hoping to see a gas mileage improvement of about 10-15%. I’ll be keeping track.
I found your blog on google and read a few of your other posts. I just added you to my Google News Reader. Keep up the good work. Look forward to reading more from you in the future.

Just a note on air filters. While it was true restricted air filters reduced mileage on carburator cars, it acts like a choke delivering more fuel, on newer fuel injected cars the restriction acts as a throttle plate which limits air flow and power. No loss of mileage, possibly better mileage from less power developed. The data used for the fuel economy web site is over 25 years old and does not apply today.
Also as filters get dirty they stop more dirt, protecting better, not worse.
